This Too Shall Pass. 10 Ideas to Support You in Difficult Times.

  • If you have the blessing to have a kind, wise person in your life, speak to them. Seek out other groups/individuals who can offer support to your wellbeing in whatever way: therapy, yoga, self help groups, monasteries…
  • Think of a major challenge in life you have previously overcome. At the time you might have thought “I can’t get through this.” You did.
  • Look for that which nourishes you. Bath in nature, open your eyes to the friendliness of strangers, listen to wise people.
  • Let the sadness be. Sadness is a natural part of life. There is a difference to feeling sadness and inflaming suffering. Is there anything you currently do which adds suffering to the painful situation? Substitute this action with one which you feel would be more helpful. If you don’t succeed, don’t beat yourself up. Each day is full of fresh possibilities.
  • Be mindful of external factors which affect how you are feeling. Are you being more vulnerable to feeling low when you are tired? State clearly: “ I am tired right now. This is a one of the factors affecting me. This factor will change.”
  • Don’t take important decisions when the mind feels foggy. Wait for the fog to clear. It will, eventually.
  • However you are feeling right now, remember there are countless other humans sharing those feelings in this very moment.
  • Be mindful of the negativity bias of the mind. Have you considered the possibility that things might turn out not as bad as you think…?
  • Don’t be too sure that this is ‘bad’. Recall situations in your life where something good has evolved out of painful experiences, even though it certainly didn’t feel like it at the time.
  • This too shall pass. Whatever it is.

  1. This is beautiful and so true, dear Kerstin. Thank you for this… I will keep this in mind for myself, but also send it to several people I know who need these words.

    With gratitude,Michèle
