Dance to Songs You Haven’t Chosen. A Poem.

Go on.

Make your way to this club

everyone is talking about.

The bouncer looks scary,

but the door policy

is weirdly generous.

All you have to do is

hand over the

What Ifs and Maybes.

Then, enter.

Surrender your ‘self’

to this stuffy mess.

Dance to the beat

of being.

Let the base vibrate

through every cell.

Dance to songs

you haven’t chosen.

The set is shite at times.

But don’t bother approaching the DJ

– he’s not one for requests.

The songs you like the least

are the ones which teach you best how to move

if you don’t resist.

Step outside

ever so often.

Give yourself a break

from smoke and sweat.

Take deep breaths

of fresh air.

Wait for the set to improve.

Celebrate the tunes you love.

Dance

as if nobody is watching.

Keep moving

to the rhythm of songs

you haven’t chosen

until the bouncer smiles,

as the dancer disappears,

and only melody remains.
